How fast can a slow site realistically get?

That depends on what is causing the slowness, and we will not quote a number before profiling. A site whose server responds in over a second, ships megabytes of unused JavaScript and serves uncompressed images usually has large, obvious gains available; a site that is already well built may only improve at the margins, and we will tell you that rather than sell an engagement. What we can commit to is a measured baseline, a prioritised list, and honest before-and-after numbers from real users.

Will optimisation break anything?

Accepted Answer

It can, if done carelessly — aggressive caching that serves stale prices, removed JavaScript that a tracking script depended on, or lazy loading applied to the hero image, which makes the main metric worse. We work in small reviewable changes, test on a preview deployment, keep analytics and conversion tracking under explicit verification, and roll back one change rather than a whole release when something misbehaves.

Why is our PageSpeed score high but the site still feels slow?

Because a lab score is a simulation on one synthetic device, while what your visitors feel is field data across their real phones, networks and cache states. A page can score well and still have a slow interaction response, a font that delays visible text, or a first visit that is far heavier than the repeat visit the test measured. We optimise for the field numbers and use lab tools only to diagnose.

Do we have to rebuild the site to make it fast?

Usually not. Most sites carry a handful of dominant problems — an unoptimised hero image, render-blocking third-party scripts, an uncached database query, a page-builder shipping code for components that are not on the page — and fixing those delivers most of the available gain. A rebuild becomes the honest recommendation when the platform itself makes the fixes impossible, and in that case we say so with the profiling data attached.

Does performance actually affect sales and search rankings?

It affects both, though not in a way that can be reduced to a promised percentage. Slow pages lose visitors before they see anything, and mobile users on constrained networks abandon quickest, so speed is closest to a revenue issue on exactly the traffic most businesses depend on. Core Web Vitals are also a ranking signal, but a secondary one — speed will not rescue weak content, it removes a handicap.

How does the database affect page speed?

More than most teams expect. A page that runs one query per item in a list, reads every column of a wide table, or repeats the same lookup on each request can spend most of its response time waiting on data before rendering begins. We profile the actual queries behind slow templates and fix them with narrower selects, proper indexes, aggregate SQL and a caching layer — work we have done on our own production database, where it reduced both latency and data transfer.

What about third-party scripts we cannot remove?

Chat widgets, ad pixels, review platforms and tag managers are frequently the single largest cost on the main thread, and they belong to teams who are not measuring your INP. Where a script cannot be removed for business reasons, we defer it, load it on interaction, load it only on the pages that need it, or move what we can server-side. We also quantify each one so the decision to keep it is made with its price visible.

The audit and profiling phase typically takes days rather than weeks, and the first high-impact fixes usually ship shortly after. Lab measurements confirm improvements immediately, but field data updates on a rolling window, so the numbers Google reports move over several weeks — anyone showing you a corrected field score the day after deployment is showing you a lab test.

Will the site stay fast after you finish?

Only if regressions are made visible, which is why we leave performance budgets, monitoring and a documented baseline behind. Sites usually slow down again gradually: a new marketing tag, an uncompressed banner, a component that pulls in a heavy library. Catching that in a deploy check costs minutes; discovering it months later costs another engagement.

What access do you need to do this?

Analytics and Search Console for field data, a staging or preview environment for changes, repository access if we are implementing rather than advising, and someone who can answer why a particular script is on the page. Read access to the database or query logs is extremely useful when server response time is the bottleneck, and we can work with masked or non-production data for that.
